How to reach Dozza without a car

There is no railway station in Dozza’s hilltop old town. A practical public-transport approach is TPER line 101 from Bologna toward Imola, changing at Toscanella for the Prontobus 147 to Dozza. The final leg is a booked service with a predefined route and timetable: it is not an ordinary frequent bus you can assume will appear.
Alternatively, take a train to Imola and arrange a taxi for the hilltop village. That option reduces the dependence on the Prontobus timetable but costs more. Request a vehicle quote for both directions; do not budget using an unsupported per-person taxi price.
Plan the outward and return buses together

Start by choosing an available 147 journey in the current TPER timetable, then work backward to a Bologna–Toscanella connection on line 101. Check the precise transfer stop with the operator when booking. A stop name or old timetable from a travel blog is not enough to establish which side of the road to use.
Reserve the return leg at the same time. A village visit is much easier when the last-mile transport is settled before lunch. If the planned 147 is unavailable, change the day, arrange a taxi, or choose a rail destination such as Ferrara.
- Check the dated line 147 timetable and its school-day or holiday notes.
- Reserve the required boarding and alighting stops.
- Find a line 101 journey that reaches Toscanella with a sensible buffer.
- Confirm the return 147 and the onward 101, allowing time to walk back from the old town.
Booking Prontobus 147
TPER’s line page states that booking is required at least 60 minutes before departure. Its Prontobus instructions give +39 051 290299; registered users can also book online. Supply the date, passenger count, line, boarding stop, destination stop and desired departure.
The general booking desk hours shown are Monday–Saturday 06:50–20:00 and Sunday/holidays 07:00–20:00. Those are booking-desk hours, not a promise that buses run continuously throughout them. Individual timetable footnotes may set different advance-booking requirements; follow the note for your selected journey.
Ask about accessible vehicles and boarding arrangements when reserving if needed. Do not assume that a booking guarantees the vehicle configuration you require without confirmation.
Tickets, costs and realistic journey time

TPER says Prontobus uses ordinary extraurban fares, with no reservation surcharge apart from the cost of a phone call. Buy the correct zonal ticket for the journey you intend to make, and ask whether it covers the transfer. Bologna’s €2.30 urban single is not automatically the fare for travel out to Dozza.
No single door-to-door time applies: the wait at Toscanella can matter more than the short hilltop bus leg. As an editorial planning allowance, leave around two hours each way until you have checked a complete connection. A tightly connected result may be quicker, but do not book an attraction against an assumed nine-minute transfer or five-minute walk from an unconfirmed stop.
Use the complete zonal bus fare quoted for your journey. For a taxi, request the total price for the vehicle and both collection points, rather than multiplying a per-person estimate.
Imola train plus taxi alternative
The Bologna–Imola train is useful if the 147 timetable does not fit. Arrange a taxi from Imola to Dozza before leaving Bologna, including a return collection point and time. A taxi rank does not guarantee that a vehicle will be waiting when your train arrives.
Compare the total price for your group and the luggage allowance. When visiting on a busy event day in Imola, book transport particularly carefully: a race or concert can affect both vehicle availability and road access. Allow the taxi driver to advise the practical village drop-off point.
A manageable visit in Dozza
Once in the village, keep the day focused on the painted streets and the Rocca area. The murals are an outdoor walk through an inhabited town; respect doorways and residents rather than treating every façade as an attraction entrance. The fortress and regional wine venue have their own opening hours and admission arrangements.
Check those hours before choosing the outward bus if an interior visit matters. Leave time for lunch, uneven streets and the walk back to the reserved stop. A late meal is not a reason to miss the only booked return connection.
Dozza is best treated as a deliberate full-day or generous half-day outing, not an effortless extra after another city. If you want a simpler connection, compare the Bologna day-trip shortlist.
Departure logistics in Bologna
Line 101 uses Bologna’s Autostazione, near Centrale. Allow time to find the correct bay and buy the right extraurban ticket. A long-distance coach reservation and a TPER bus ticket are separate products.
If starting from a hotel across the city, the Bologna transport guide helps with the journey to the terminal. Keep the Prontobus booking details available offline and save the operator’s contact number before you depart.
Getting to the departure point
Before leaving your hotel, check Bologna’s city transport options and allow time to reach the correct rail platform or bus bay. Keep enough flexibility on the return to continue back to your accommodation.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is there a direct bus from Bologna to Dozza?
The usual TPER approach needs line 101 to Toscanella and a booked Prontobus 147 onward to Dozza. Confirm the dated connections and stops.
Do I have to book the 147?
Yes. TPER states at least 60 minutes in advance by phone, or online for registered users. Check the selected timetable’s footnotes for any stricter requirement.
What does Prontobus cost?
Ordinary extraurban fares apply, without a separate reservation surcharge apart from call costs. Ask TPER for the correct zones and transfer validity.
Can I travel via Imola instead?
Yes: take a train to Imola and prearrange a taxi to Dozza. Agree the vehicle fare and return pickup before travelling.
Can I decide the return once I arrive?
It is better to reserve the return before leaving. Available Prontobus trips and onward buses constrain the outing; a taxi is a separately priced fallback.
