Last updated September 2026. The Lisbon to Tomar train is a useful car-free route for a full day around Convento de Cristo and the old town. Choose a direct Regional service if simplicity matters, compare your actual boarding station, and allow roughly two hours each way. This guide uses CP’s timetable to build a realistic day plan.

Lisbon to Tomar Train: Quick Answer

CP runs direct Regional trains from Santa Apolónia and Oriente to Tomar. The Lisboa–Tomar timetable, effective 14 December 2025, lists daily train R4407 at Santa Apolónia 07:45, Oriente 07:53 and Tomar 09:46. Daily R4411 leaves the same Lisbon stations at 09:45/09:53 and arrives at 11:51. Recheck your travel date and service notices before relying on these examples. The earlier train gives more flexibility for the hilltop monument and a leisurely lunch. A later start can still work, but choose your main priority instead of trying to fit the same schedule into a shorter visit. Check that the journey result ends at Tomar: a departure shown on this corridor is not automatically a through train to your destination.

Which Lisbon Station to Use: Santa Apolónia vs Oriente

Choose the station that is easier to reach from your accommodation, rather than automatically travelling across Lisbon to the starting station. Santa Apolónia connects to the Blue metro line beside Alfama; Oriente connects to the Red line in Parque das Nações and is convenient for the airport. Both are served by the direct departures illustrated here. Compare the walk, metro transfers and time needed to find the rail platform. The slightly shorter train ride from Oriente is not a saving if reaching it adds a much longer local journey. Our Lisbon public transport guide and metro ticket guide cover that first leg. It is separate from the Regional train ticket: a Lisbon urban rail or Metro product should not be treated as a ticket to Tomar. If you need assistance, arrange it with CP and confirm both station access and the train’s boarding facilities.

Direct Regional Train vs a Change at Entroncamento

Entroncamento is a junction on this route. Some journey results connect there between a faster main-line train and the Tomar branch. A transfer is not inherently a trap, and it can suit a particular departure window. Compare the actual arrival time, fare, transfer margin and ticket conditions against the direct Regional option. A faster first leg does not guarantee the fastest overall trip, but neither should every connecting itinerary be dismissed as slower. For a first visit, our preference is a direct service when its timing works: it removes one connection and one opportunity to board the wrong train. If you choose a connection, inspect both legs before paying. Confirm that the last leg really reaches Tomar, and distinguish the train’s final destination from your interchange station. Do not buy only the Lisbon–Entroncamento portion and assume it covers the remaining branch journey.

Fares and Tickets: What to Verify with CP

The timetable establishes operating times, not a current fare quote. Use CP’s journey search for your travel date, exact stations and passenger category. Compare the return price shown with two singles instead of assuming a discount or copying an old €10–€11 estimate. For any concession, use the rules for the Regional service you are buying; a discount described only on a Lisbon urban-train page is not adequate evidence. Have the required proof with you. Direct Regional travel does not provide a numbered reserved seat, so distinguish buying a ticket in advance from reserving a particular seat. Review the sales options and conditions CP offers for the chosen journey. If buying at a station, allow time for the transaction before boarding. For an itinerary containing Intercidades or Alfa Pendular, check the reservation attached to that leg separately. Do not apply a main-line reservation rule to every train in the itinerary.

A Realistic Day Trip for Convento de Cristo

One published daily return, R4430, leaves Tomar at 17:11 and reaches Oriente at 19:06 and Santa Apolónia at 19:13. Paired with R4407, this gives 7 hours 25 minutes between arrival and departure at Tomar, with 4 hours 3 minutes aboard trains from Santa Apolónia and back. These are calculated station-to-station windows, not promised sightseeing time. Deduct the last-mile journeys, boarding margin and any queues. Our suggested order is the hilltop monument first, lunch and the old town afterward, then a comfortable walk back for the return. The official cultural-heritage listing identifies the Charola, cloisters and Manueline window as elements of the monument. The Charola is part of this visit, not a separate distant attraction to add afterward. Check opening arrangements and tickets independently of the train. An overnight stay makes sense if you want a slower visit or have several other stops in mind; it is not necessary just to see the main monument and town.

Train vs Coach: Comparing the Actual Journey

The direct train is our starting recommendation because you can plan around a through journey and a town station. However, comfort and value depend on your needs, not simply the mode. Search Rede Expressos for a coach on your exact date if its Lisbon terminal is easier for you. Compare departure and arrival addresses, waiting time, fare conditions and the return schedule. An advertised starting fare is not a quote for your departure, and dynamic pricing does not guarantee that prices rise steadily every day before travel. Avoid choosing solely on a small headline price difference if reaching the terminal is substantially harder. If travelling as a group, compare the full cost for everyone; for a solo traveller, a private transfer needs a very different budget. Our Setúbal train guide is a useful alternative when a shorter rail outing would fit better.

Arriving in Tomar: Town First or the Hilltop Monument?

Tomar station is on the southern side of the town, while Convento de Cristo stands above the historic centre. Treat the walk to the monument as an uphill part of the visit, not a five-minute station exit. Look up the actual visitor entrance in your map app rather than navigating only to the centre of the monument’s footprint. As an editorial planning allowance, reserve 30–40 minutes for walking uphill, orientation and a breather; your route, pace and weather may require more. This is not a measured accessibility promise. If the climb is unsuitable, arrange a taxi or other transfer and ask where it can drop you relative to the entrance. Do not assume a vehicle will be waiting when your train arrives. The monument’s own internal accessibility also needs checking: removing the uphill approach does not establish that every room or level is step-free. Keep the return walk and station margin in your plan even if the outward journey was by taxi.

Tomar, Fátima and Other Lisbon Day-Trip Choices

Treat Tomar and Fátima as separate outings unless you have checked an actual connection between them and have enough time for both visits. Geographical proximity alone does not establish a convenient public-transport link. The Fátima bus guide covers the Lisbon journey to the sanctuary town. If a longer rail day appeals, compare Évora’s train schedule; do not assume its weekend departures match Tomar’s. For a different emphasis, choose Sintra for a palace-focused outing or Cascais for the coast. A short train ride to Sintra does not mean its palace visit fits a short half-day: local transfers and admission arrangements add time. Our Lisbon day-trip comparison helps match transport time to the visit you actually want.

Mistakes to Avoid

Use this short check before committing to the day:

  • Counting every Lisbon departure in the corridor timetable as a direct Tomar train.
  • Rejecting or choosing an Entroncamento connection without comparing the complete journey.
  • Assuming a Regional ticket includes a reserved seat.
  • Using Lisbon urban fares or concessions as proof of Tomar ticket conditions.
  • Counting all the station-to-station visit window as time inside the monument.
  • Treating the Charola as a separate outing rather than part of Convento de Cristo.
  • Adding Fátima without checking the actual transport between the two towns.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is there a direct train from Lisbon to Tomar?

Yes. Select a through Regional service ending at Tomar. Other search results may involve a change at Entroncamento.

How long does the train take?

Allow roughly two hours each way, with the exact duration depending on your boarding station and service. Some departures exceed two hours from Santa Apolónia.

How much is the train ticket?

Obtain the current fare from CP for your date, stations and passenger category. The timetable alone does not establish a ticket price.

Should I board at Santa Apolónia or Oriente?

Use whichever is easier to reach from your starting point. Check the entire door-to-platform journey rather than choosing only by time aboard the train.

Is Tomar a realistic day trip?

Yes, with an early start and a planned return. Keep the visit focused on Convento de Cristo and the old town, allowing time for the uphill approach.

Should I take a direct train or change at Entroncamento?

A direct service is simpler. A connecting itinerary can still make sense if its actual arrival time, transfer margin and total price suit you better.
