Last updated September 2026. The Porto to Braga train is an easy car-free day trip, but the cheapest service and the fastest service are different products. A CP urban ticket costs €3.60 each way at the standard 2026 adult fare; several useful daily departures take 1 hour 13 minutes from São Bento. Alfa Pendular and Intercidades trains from Campanhã can shorten the ride, with a reserved seat and a substantially higher full fare. This September 2026 guide separates those choices and explains the extra bus and hillside journey to Bom Jesus do Monte.

Porto to Braga Train: Quick Answer

For a flexible day out, start with a direct CP Urban train displaying Braga as its destination. São Bento is convenient if you are staying in Porto's historic centre; the same through train then calls at Campanhã. You do not need to change between those stations when you are already on the correct Braga service. Not every northbound urban departure reaches Braga, however: some terminate short or follow the Guimarães branch. Check the destination board before boarding. Choose Alfa Pendular or Intercidades only after comparing its actual departure time, not just the shorter time on board. Our day trips from Porto by train guide compares this outing with other selected destinations.

Stations and Sample Train Times

The CP Braga urban timetable effective 26 July 2026 distinguishes daily and weekday trains. The examples below are daily services in the published tables, not a promise of disruption-free operation or a complete timetable. The reserved-train examples come from CP's currently linked mainline timetable. All times are local. Check your travel date in CP's planner before leaving.

Urban Train or Reserved Alfa Pendular and Intercidades?

The urban train is the budget choice: no assigned seat, no need to commit to a particular return departure, and direct departures from central São Bento. Its journey time varies by stopping pattern; do not apply the duration of one fast weekday commuter service to every departure. AP and IC provide a booked seat on a specific train and depart from Campanhã, not São Bento. Their shorter ride may be useful when you are already near Campanhã, but reaching that station and waiting for a less convenient departure can erase the saving. For example, the 08:50 urban service reaches Braga before the 09:50 Alfa despite spending longer on the railway. See the Porto train station guide if the two departure points are unfamiliar.

  • Pick the urban train for an inexpensive, flexible day trip.
  • Pick AP or IC when its scheduled departure and reserved seat justify the extra cost.
  • Compare arrival time and total station access, not only the fastest advertised journey.
  • For boarding assistance or a step-free route, confirm the specific stations and train with CP; do not assume every connection is equally accessible.

2026 Ticket Prices and How to Buy

CP's 2026 Porto urban fare sheet and zone matrix place both São Bento–Braga and Campanhã–Braga in eight CP fare zones. The standard adult single is €3.60. Two singles cost €7.20; add €0.50 if you need a new occasional CP card, making €7.70 for that card plus two ordinary journeys. This is a two-single calculation, not a special discounted return offer. Buy the correct destination ticket at a CP machine or staffed sales point and validate the urban ticket before travel. Keep the reusable carrier for the return. The full reserved-train prices below are from CP's 2026 Alfa Pendular tariff and 2026 Intercidades tariff. Eligible concessions and promotional availability can change the amount quoted for a particular passenger.

ProductStandard adult one-way fareImportant distinction
CP Urban, 8 CP zones€3.60New occasional CP carrier: €0.50 extra
Intercidades, second class€13.55Reserved train and seat; not an urban ticket
Alfa Pendular, Turística€17.00Reserved train and seat; not an urban ticket

Why Andante Does Not Cover the Whole Braga Trip

Braga is outside the Andante-covered section of this railway. CP's fare/network sheet marks Andante coverage only as far as Lousado on the Braga corridor. An Andante ticket or Porto-area pass therefore does not by itself pay for the whole journey to Braga, and eight CP fare zones do not mean an Andante Z8 ticket. Ask for a CP ticket to Braga rather than buying a larger Andante zone product and hoping it applies. Your Metro or city-bus ride to the departure station is a separate journey unless your particular ticket explicitly includes it. A qualifying AP or IC ticket has a different benefit: under CP's app conditions, the São Bento–Campanhã urban connection is covered within one hour before the main train or after its arrival. This does not include Metro travel. Keep the mainline ticket available and follow CP's conditions for that connection.

Arriving in Braga and Planning the Return

Braga railway station is the end point of the train journey, not the entrance to Bom Jesus. Separate your day into time in the historic centre and a local-transport outing to the sanctuary. A practical, unhurried plan is a morning urban train, the centre and lunch, then Bom Jesus if the bus and funicular timings work. Reverse that order if you prefer visiting the hillside earlier. Leave room for the return bus, a walk or connection back to the railway station, and buying or validating your train ticket. Save at least two suitable return departures from CP's live planner before heading uphill. If you booked AP or IC, that reserved return is a fixed commitment; an ordinary urban ticket is not a substitute for it. A whole day in Braga is more forgiving than squeezing another city between these stops.

Getting to Bom Jesus do Monte by Bus and Funicular

Use TUB line 2 towards Bom Jesus for the local bus connection. The operator's published stop list includes Nova Estação II and Rotunda Estação I near the railway station, then city-centre stops including Liberdade (25 de Abril). Its 27 January 2026 timetable shows daytime half-hourly service in the weekday, Saturday and Sunday/public-holiday columns. For example, Liberdade 09:10 reaches Bom Jesus at 09:30 in all three columns. That is a 20-minute example from Liberdade, not a station-to-sanctuary guarantee. Check the direction and current stop notices before boarding; TUB travel is separate from your CP train fare. Walking all the way is possible, but it is a separate uphill outing, not a short stroll from the train.

  • The sanctuary operator's visitor information lists the funicular at €2.50 one way or €4 return. The stairs are an alternative for visitors comfortable with a substantial climb.
  • The listed summer window is 08:55–19:55; winter is 08:55–12:55 and 13:55–17:55. Confirm which seasonal timetable applies to your date.
  • The same notice reports temporary bus-stop relocation during works at the funicular stations, with regular lift trips at :15 and :45 and the first and last trips unchanged. Recheck the temporary pickup point and service before committing to a close connection.
  • If steps or steep paths are unsuitable, confirm access with TUB and the sanctuary. Riding the funicular is not, by itself, proof that your whole route is step-free.

Can You Combine Braga and Guimarães?

Yes, but you do not have to travel all the way back to Porto. The transport authority's 2026 line 101 timetable via the A11 lists a direct bus from Braga Central to Guimarães Terminal Rodoviário. A typical example is 13:00–13:50; the sheet has separate school and reduced-season schedules. Crucially, this service does not run on Saturdays, Sundays, public holidays or Carnival. The listed autumn school period begins on 14 September 2026. These are coach terminals, not the two railway stations, so allow for local access at either end. A rail alternative uses the connection between the branches at Lousado; check CP's date-specific planner for a workable transfer. Combining the cities is a brisk option if you prioritise their centres. For a relaxed Braga day including Bom Jesus, leave Guimarães for another outing. Our Porto to Guimarães train guide covers the separate Porto route.

Porto Airport to Braga Without Going into Porto

There is no direct CP train from Porto Airport's terminal to Braga. If Braga is your first destination, compare the direct coach before travelling into Porto to catch a train. The current GET BUS airport–Braga timetable lists Porto Airport's P8 coach parking area and Braga Central de Camionagem, Cais 20, with a scheduled 45-minute nonstop journey. Traffic can extend that time. The operator recommends arriving at the bus at least 15 minutes before departure; check the booking price and luggage conditions for your trip. Do not mistake the coach terminal for Braga railway station. If you choose Metro plus train instead, plan the Porto station connection separately using our Porto Airport transfer guide, and allow for flight delays before booking a fixed AP or IC departure.

Other Car-Free Day Trips to Compare

Braga works well when you want a historic centre and a hillside sanctuary in the same outing. For a different emphasis, compare Aveiro by train for canals and architecture, or Espinho by train for a coastal day. The Douro alternatives include the train to Pinhão and the train to Régua. Viana do Castelo offers another northern rail outing, while Coimbra needs its own station-to-centre planning. Amarante is a bus trip, not a currently served CP rail destination. Choose one main outing around the travel time you actually want rather than treating every destination as interchangeable.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is there a direct train from Porto to Braga?

Yes. CP runs direct urban trains from São Bento through Campanhã to Braga, plus reserved Alfa Pendular and Intercidades services from Campanhã. Check that the selected train reaches Braga; some other northbound departures terminate short or follow another branch.

How long does the Porto to Braga train take?

Several useful daily urban services take 1 hour 13 minutes from São Bento or 1 hour 8 minutes from Campanhã. Other stopping patterns differ. Published reserved-service examples take 39 minutes on AP131 and 42 minutes on IC721 from Campanhã. Check your date before travelling.

How much is a Porto to Braga train ticket in 2026?

The standard adult CP Urban fare is €3.60 one way from São Bento or Campanhã, plus €0.50 if a new occasional CP card is needed. Two singles plus a new card total €7.70. Standard one-way reserved fares are €13.55 in Intercidades second class and €17 in Alfa Pendular Turística; eligible discounts may reduce these.

Can I use Andante to travel to Braga?

Not for the whole journey. Andante coverage on this corridor ends at Lousado, before Braga. Buy the appropriate CP ticket for Braga; CP's eight-zone fare is not an Andante Z8 ticket.

How do I reach Bom Jesus from Braga station?

Use TUB line 2 towards Bom Jesus, checking the station-area stop and any temporary relocation notice. At the hillside, choose the funicular or the stairs. The sanctuary lists the lift at €2.50 one way or €4 return; confirm seasonal hours and current works before travel.

Can I visit Braga and Guimarães in one day?

Yes, with a brisk schedule. Line 101 provides a direct weekday bus between the coach terminals, but its 2026 timetable excludes weekends, public holidays and Carnival. Rail connections can use Lousado instead of returning through Porto. Check your date and allow for terminal access; Braga alone is easier if Bom Jesus is a priority.

Is there a direct train from Porto Airport to Braga?

No. For an all-rail approach you need Metro into Porto followed by a CP train. GET BUS offers a direct coach between airport P8 and Braga's coach terminal, Cais 20, with a scheduled 45-minute journey. Check the current timetable and ticket price before booking.
