Last updated September 2026, this Porto to Coimbra train guide explains the direct Campanhã–Coimbra-B services, official fares and the final connection into town. CP's currently linked mainline timetable includes direct journeys of about an hour to a little over an hour, making a focused day trip practical. The important arrival change is at Coimbra-B: the old rail link to Coimbra city station closed in 2025, and the municipality announces a new Metrobus connection from 10 September 2026.

Quick Answer: Direct Train from Porto Campanhã to Coimbra-B

Choose a direct Alfa Pendular or Intercidades departure from Porto Campanhã to Coimbra-B. The city-centre São Bento station is a possible starting point for a separate connecting urban train, not the boarding station for those mainline services. Coimbra-B is the right rail destination for this trip; allow extra time to reach the lower town or hilltop university after arrival. Compare the full day, not simply the minutes aboard the train, with the other options in our Porto day-trip comparison.

  • Departure: Porto Campanhã for the direct mainline leg.
  • Arrival: Coimbra-B, followed by local transport or a planned walk into town.
  • Train choice: Alfa Pendular or Intercidades, both with a reserved place for the booked service.
  • 2026 standard adult single: €19.70 in Alfa Pendular Turística or €15.25 in Intercidades second class; promotions and other ticket categories differ.
  • Main planning task: match the return train and any university entry slot before filling the rest of the day.

Train Options and Official 2026 Fares

Compare the actual departures on your date rather than assuming every Alfa is much quicker or every Intercidades ticket is cheaper than a discounted Alfa. The standard fares below come from CP's fare sheets effective 1 January 2026: Alfa Pendular fares and Intercidades fares. They are adult full-price examples, not promotional minimums or a live quotation for a particular departure.

A standard return is a different product from simply doubling a single fare. Check that the return discount applies to the itinerary you buy, and compare it with available promotional singles. Prices for first class, Conforto, children or other concession categories are not the second-class figures in this table. No particular train's availability or luggage space is guaranteed by the fare sheet.

Journey Times: Read the Timetable by Train and Day

The mainline timetable currently linked by CP, headed valid from 14 December 2025, shows daily AP130 from Campanhã at 06:40 to Coimbra-B at 07:41 and daily IC720 at 10:45 to 11:54. These are examples demonstrating a direct journey of 1 hour 1 minute or 1 hour 9 minutes, not a promise that every departure takes the same time. Other columns have different operating-day notes and stopping patterns.

Use CP's date-specific journey search and service notices before booking. Do not treat those examples as a complete list, a recommendation to depart before dawn, or proof that a train will operate unchanged during engineering work. For a day trip, compare a suitable morning arrival with an evening return first. The return departure is from Coimbra-B, so leave time to get back there from your final attraction.

Starting at São Bento and Connecting at Campanhã

If your accommodation is near São Bento, take an appropriate CP urban service to Campanhã and change platforms for the mainline train. A short rail ride is not the whole transfer allowance: finding the platform, waiting, luggage and assistance can take longer. Our Porto station guide explains the two facilities and their separate metro entrances.

Under CP's current conditions, qualifying tickets to or from Campanhã include a São Bento–Campanhã urban connection within the hour before the main departure or up to one hour after arrival. Keep the main ticket and check its conditions before buying another local fare. This benefit is not unlimited urban travel and does not cover a metro journey. If using local buses or metro instead, consult the Porto transport overview, including its dated 12–13 September metro-works notice.

Coimbra-B to the Centre: The September 2026 Change

Do not plan a connecting train to Coimbra-A, also called Coimbra city station or Estação Nova. Infraestruturas de Portugal's closure notice records the rail link's withdrawal on 12 January 2025 for conversion to Metrobus. Temporary road transfers were introduced while the new link was being built; an old rail timetable or replacement-bus article is not proof of today's arrangement.

The municipality's September mobility announcement sets out new Metrobus links to Coimbra-B and Praça da República from 10 September 2026, alongside changes to city buses. Check Metro Mondego's current travel information for the service and stop matching your destination. Portagem and the lower town are not the same destination as the university or Praça da República.

The new operator timetable and exact visitor fare could not be independently confirmed in this review. Do not assume the former free CP replacement transfer or an older SMTUC fare automatically applies to the new Metrobus. Confirm the ticket product and validation method at the station or with the operator. A taxi is an alternative if the connection does not meet your needs; check the pickup point and fare before travelling.

Can You Walk from Coimbra-B?

Walking is an option for some visitors, but choose a specific endpoint on a pedestrian map. The station-to-lower-town approach and the additional climb to the university are different journeys. A generic twenty-minute walk cannot stand for both, especially with bags, heat or reduced mobility. Equally, a compulsory forty-minute walk should not be built into every train itinerary when there are local transport options.

If you prefer to walk, check crossings, gradients and current diversions, and keep enough energy for the return. For a wheelchair user or anyone needing boarding assistance, consult CP's SIM service for the actual train and stations before travel. Confirm the onward vehicle and attraction entrance separately. Accessibility at the rail platform does not establish a step-free route through Coimbra's upper town.

Tickets, Advance Booking and Seat Reservations

CP's online ticket-office terms allow purchases up to 60 days ahead and up to 15 minutes before departure from your boarding station, subject to the services available for sale. That deadline is not a sensible target for reaching the station. Book a specific outward and return service, check the passenger details, and retain the ticket in a form you can access offline.

The Promo ticket page describes limited advance-purchase discounts and says that, from 10 August 2026, Promo tickets are sold through digital channels and ticket machines. Discounted inventory can sell out. Read the fare's exchange and refund conditions before purchase rather than assuming that every cheaper ticket is flexible.

Compare the final price in euros when using a reseller. Displaying pounds or dollars does not itself prove a markup, but currency conversion, service fees and after-sales terms can change the comparison. CP's official checkout is the baseline for its own fares. A Porto Andante product does not pay for the Campanhã–Coimbra-B mainline journey.

Day Trip or Overnight: Plan Around the University

Coimbra is a workable day trip when you choose a direct train, keep the sightseeing focused and plan the station connection. Our editorial recommendation is to choose the university plus part of the lower town, rather than trying to cover every museum and both riverbanks before a fixed return. An overnight suits a slower visit, evening plans or several interiors; it is not required simply because the mainline station is outside the centre.

For a library visit, the University of Coimbra's own programme explains that the date and time on the ticket refer to entry to Biblioteca Joanina. Other included spaces can be visited before or after that slot under the programme's conditions. Leave a realistic margin after your train arrival for the local connection and uphill approach. A ticket to the university is not a timed reservation on the train, and one booking does not protect the other if you arrive late.

Train Versus Coach and Other Porto Day Trips

Compare a date-specific coach offer from Rede Expressos with the train's final price and timings. This review did not confirm a current coach quotation, so there is no basis for saying a €12.50 bus is always cheapest or that all coaches take the same time as the train. Use the exact boarding and arrival stops shown in the booking; a Campanhã coach bay is not a CP rail platform. The Porto coach-terminal guide helps with that distinction.

If a lower-cost or shorter outing matters more than visiting Coimbra, compare the Espinho beach trip, Aveiro canal visit, Braga route or Guimarães old-town trip. The Viana do Castelo route and road-based Amarante outing offer different destinations, not automatically cheaper substitutes. Choose the city you want to see, then test the transport plan.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is there a direct train from Porto to Coimbra?

Yes. Alfa Pendular and Intercidades connect Porto Campanhã with Coimbra-B directly. São Bento is a separate connecting urban-train starting point, not the boarding station for those direct mainline trains.

How long does the train journey take?

CP's currently linked mainline timetable includes direct examples of 1 hour 1 minute on Alfa Pendular and 1 hour 9 minutes on Intercidades. Other departures differ; check the service for your date and add local transfers at both ends.

What are the official 2026 Porto–Coimbra train fares?

CP's 2026 full adult singles are €19.70 in Alfa Pendular Turística and €15.25 in Intercidades second class. Published standard returns are €35.50 and €27.50 respectively. Promotional tickets and other passenger categories have different prices and conditions.

Does a train still connect Coimbra-B with Coimbra-A?

No. The old rail connection closed in January 2025. The municipality announces a Metrobus extension to Coimbra-B from 10 September 2026; check the current operator service, stops and ticket conditions rather than relying on an old rail or temporary-shuttle guide.

How far ahead can I book with CP?

The online ticket-office terms allow booking up to 60 days ahead and up to 15 minutes before departure from your boarding station, subject to availability. Reserve earlier if a particular train is essential to your day.

Is Coimbra realistic as a day trip from Porto?

Yes, with a direct train and a focused itinerary. Allow time for the Coimbra-B connection and the climb to the university, and arrange any Biblioteca Joanina entry slot around your rail arrival. An overnight is a preference for a fuller visit, not a necessity.

Is the coach always cheaper than the train?

No current coach quotation was confirmed in this review. Compare the dated final fare, terminal locations, baggage terms and journey duration with CP's available tickets; a promotion can change which option is cheaper.
